Insects in domestic corn and sorghum stored in steel silos in Taiwan
Plant Protection Bulletin (Taipei) 40 (4), 309-314
Abstract: Silos with a capacity of 1000 tons were made of corrugated circular steel 10 m in diameter and 12 m in height. Within one week after the corn and sorghum was delivered into the silos operated by Yensui, Hsiayin, Chungyin, Suilin, Yichu, Taitung, and Hualien Farmers' Associations, 6 samples, each containing 1 liter of grain, were randomly taken on the surface, and at 2-3-week intervals, thereafter. The various insect species and their number in the samples were determined. There were seven species of insects commonly found in stored corn and sorghum: Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Liposcelis bostrychophilus Badonnel and Plodia interpunctella (Hubner). Latheticca oryzae Waterhouse and Cadra cautella (Walker) were only found in sorghum and corn respectively. Based on the percentage of infestation and average density, it was shown that S. zeamais and O. surinamensis (L.) were the key pests in stored corn; C. ferrugineus and R. dominica were the key pests in sorghum.
